    Damn Commies

The Commies are just a red herring.

      • http://avclub.com/ Cookie_Monster

        Me! Am! Your singing telegram!

          Bang!

  • WhiteFratBroWithDreads

NOOOOOOOO SPEC OPS WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO VIDEO GAME NARRATIVE IN SO LONG.

    • http://refrigeratorrants.wordpress.com/ Merve

Man, that game was such a mindfuck. Excellent stuff.

It also deserves mad respect for being one of the few video games with a careful understanding of how level design affects players’ emotions.

  • senor spielbergo

I love Channel Orange but considering Kendrick Lamar was all over 2013 this is kind of an upset isn’t it?

  • Lovely Bones

Breaking Bad won twice, of course. Mad Men could’ve won at least one of those times. .

    • SargentRock

If it’s any consolation Breaking Bad won’t win again…probably

      • GaryX

Oh, it could still win 2014’s 2013 show of the year.

  • Funky Bus Fare

    The Master shoulda won it.

    • Lovely Bones

      Holy Motors represent, damn it.

      • Narrator

I voted for Holy Motors, but I loved Moonrise Kingdom so much that I can’t be angry about it winning.

        • Lovely Bones

Oh, of course. I loved almost all of those movies, and most of them equally. I don’t really care which one wins, I just wish more people would see Holy Motors.

          • Narrator

If anybody reads this and they haven’t seen Holy Motors, go watch Holy Motors. It is amazing.

          • Lovely Bones

But don’t watch the US released DVD, or you’re supporting a censored version of it, sadly.

          • Narrator

The DVD is censored? What was cut out?

          • Lovely Bones

Well, it is on Netflix, VOD, other streaming services, etc., but apparently not the actual DVD, thankfully. I had thought I read about it being censored too, but apparently not. They blurred out Lavant’s dick in the scene with Eva Mendes.

          • Narrator

I was about to say, my Blu-Ray had Levant in all his glory.

          • Lovely Bones

Good to hear. I need to get it on Blu Ray, then. I originally saw it on Netflix Instant and promised I’d buy it at some point to balance out accidentally supporting censorship.

        • Vaunnies Mustardayonaise

Moonrise is Wes’ best since Rushmore, The Master is PTA’s best period, Beasts of the Southern Wild is Magical and Holy Motors STILL manages to be millions of miles above everything else. It’s one of the best films to come out in my lifetime.

    • NerdInTheBasement

Look, we all know this should have been Taken 2’s moment of victory.

    • HobbesMkii

He was still alive when I voted! I thought there would be a next year!

  • YEE YEE

    CUT MY LIFE INTO PIECES

  • HobbesMkii

Honestly, I can’t fault any of these. 2012 had some really great stuff in it.

I should read Gone Girl, I guess. It’s people like me who are the reasons the AV Club can’t have nice books to review.

  • Flag On the Moon

I don’t get the image for Gone Girl; is it like a metaphor?

    • GaryX

I honestly have no idea. It’s from an EW cover or something regarding the film adaptation. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t tell you either way.

      • Flag On the Moon

Well, it is cool you’re able to get pictures.
